About the Series

Welcome from the Editor
Welcome to the RGS-IBG Book Series! Launched in 2000 under the Editorship of Nick Henry and Jon Sadler, this is a series quite unlike almost any other in geography. The emphasis is on research not on teaching, and on authored not on edited monographs. During the past decade the Series has published over forty books across both human and physical geography with several more commissioned for publication over the next few years. David Featherstone took over from Neil Coe (2011-2014, previously Kevin Ward 2006-2010) as human geography editor in January 2015 and Tim Allott took over from Jo Bullard (2006-2013) as physical geography editor in January 2014. Tim Allott stepped down in 2016 and David Featherstone took sole editorship of the Series from 2017, four new editorial board members with physical geography and/or environmental geography expertise were also appointed

We are committed to the series publishing the very best of international academic scholarship, from geography and cognate disciplines. If you have an idea for a book please consult our guidelines. They advise you on what we need from you in your proposal. The Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) is the learned society and professional body for geography and geographers. Established in 1830 to promote ‘the advancement of geographical science’, today it is a dynamic world centre for geographical learning - supporting research, education, expeditions and fieldwork, as well as promoting public engagement and informed enjoyment of our world.

About the Book Series:
The Book Series only publishes work of the highest international standing. Its emphasis is on distinctive new developments in human and physical geography, although it is also open to contributions from cognate disciplines whose interests overlap with those of geographers. The Series places strong emphasis on theoretically-informed and empirically-strong texts. Reflecting the vibrant and diverse theoretical and empirical agendas that characterize the contemporary discipline, contributions are expected to inform, challenge and stimulate the reader. Overall, the RGS-IBG Book Series seeks to promote scholarly publications that leave an intellectual mark and change the way readers think about particular issues, methods or theories.
