Documenting and observing the world through photography has been a focus of the Society’s work since the 1880s, when John Thomson, the pioneering Scottish photographer, geographer, and traveller, who taught and inspired many Society Fellows, including the explorer and travel writer, Isabella Bird Bishop, who later commented on her passion for photography:
“I must confess that nothing ever took such a hold of me as photography has done.”
The Society also published guidance on photography as early as 1865 in its book Hints to Travellers.
‘’The aim of the traveller-photographer should be the production of good negatives. It often requires years of study on the part of professional operators (with advantages impossible to the traveller) before thoroughly good negatives are habitually produced; and it must not be supposed that a person taking up photography for the first time, in a few hurried moments before departure on a journey, will attain other than very unsatisfactory results.’’
The Society continues this photographic tradition by now offering a range of photographic courses and photo walks. Courses are open to all Fellows, Members, and the public. We offer courses on all aspects of photography from beginner instruction through to courses designed to inspire the seasoned professional.
All courses and photo walks are programmed by the Society and led by practising professional photographers chosen for their high-level knowledge and proven teaching skills.
Our courses are the perfect way to learn, hone skills, make new friends and network.
