The microlectures, as it is known, is an inspiring annual evening of short talks, which brings together a selection of less experienced speakers chosen via an application process that is open to all, including non-members of the Society.
If you have a story to share of a recent personal experience that fits the theme of geographical journeys in the broadest sense, we would like to hear from you. The Society seeks to include a wide diversity of participants and subjects.
Applications to speak at the next event are open until Monday 6 November 2023. After the deadline, shortlisted applicants will be asked to audition online. This is a supportive process with time for feedback and discussion, following which the organising committee will select the final talks.
Please apply in accordance with the guidelines.
The event
The evening takes place in March (and additionally 6 October 2023) in the Ondaatje Theatre at the Society’s building in London. The 2024 Geographical journeys: microlectures is on Thursday 14 March, at 7.00pm. The event will be hosted by broadcaster and anthropologist, Mary-Ann Ochota.
The evening has a strong social aspect and an exciting vibe. Attendees are a mixture of Society members and the interested public who are encouraged to participate by asking questions following each talk. The Map Room bar is open for drinks providing an opportunity for the audience to stay on afterwards for further discussion and meet the speakers.
Although organised by the Society’s Younger Members’ Committee, there is no expectation that either the speakers or the audience will necessarily be ‘young’. Speakers have ranged from under 20 to over 60, and the audience will be wider still.
