This Black History Month we’re sharing the stories of Black geographers from the 1800s through to the present day who have contributed to the better understanding of our world.
The Society is marking this year's Black History Month by recognising the contributions of a selection of Black geographers to the discipline. This sits alongside other initiatives to make more visible, explore, support and celebrate Black geographers and Black geographies. Each Thursday during October, we will be sharing short profiles of some of the Black geographers who have a connection with the Society or who appear in the Society’s historical Collections.
Using our Collections, we’ll be recognising those, often hidden and sometimes excluded, Black geographers working as local guides or interpreters during historic exploration. We’ll also be profiling contemporary Black geographers working in research, teaching, policy and public engagement and future Black geographers who are studying at university.
