21 years of the RGS-IBG book series

The first title in the Society’s book series was released 21 years ago this autumn. The book series has published over 50 titles since 2001, spanning distinctive new developments across the discipline and challenging the way readers think about particular issues, methods or theories in geography.

To celebrate this major birthday, editors Dr Ruth Craggs (King’s College London) and Dr Chih Yuan Woon (National University of Singapore) have commissioned a series of six reflections on the series from previous authors and editors, covering its history, current position in geography and what the next 21 years might hold.

• The Society’s Dr Catherine Souch and Dr Phil Emmerson discuss the history of the book series history, discussing how it emerged from previous book series run by the Institute of British Geographers.

• Professor Steve Hinchcliffe (University of Exeter), Dr David Featherstone (University of Glasgow), and Professor Neil Coe (National University of Singapore) all reflect on the role of books in scholarship from their positions as authors and editors of the series. They note that even in today’s world, the book series offers something different and very valuable that should continue to be celebrated.

• Dr Philippa Williams (Queen Mary University, London), and Dr Kean Fan Lim (Newcastle University) offer reflections on why they wrote their books for the series, and how these books then influenced their careers.

These pieces illustrate the strong position the RGS-IBG book series holds in the discipline and its bright future ahead.
