The deadline for early bird registration for this year’s Annual International Conference is fast approaching, and with a packed programme of sessions planned you don’t want to miss out.
The Society’s Annual International Conference is the largest annual academic geography conference in Europe and AC2021 is expected to be our largest yet. This year’s conference will be a largely virtual event, with some in-person elements including plenary and journal sponsored lectures, which will also be live streamed.
The programme features a range of exciting sessions engaging with the Chair’s theme of Borders, borderlands and bordering and is an opportunity for geographers across the globe to present new findings, discuss topical challenges and form new collaborations. This year’s plenary lectures, arranged by the Chair of Conference, Uma Kothari, feature six keynote speakers: Johny Pitts, Alison Mountz, Achille Mbembe, Kathryn Yusoff, Kimberley Peters and David Olusoga. The Chair’s welcome event on Tuesday 31 August is sure to be a fantastic opening to the conference with performances by poet Lemn Sissay, Welsh and Senegalese harpists Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita, and a series of responses to the conference theme from Patricia Noxolo, Ysanne Holt, and Nishat Awan.
When asked what she was most looking forward to about the conference, Uma said: “I am most looking forward to the different conversations that will take place as we engage with the profusion and rich variety of stimulating sessions and plenaries. It was of course very disappointing that we had to postpone the conference last year but following the long period of lockdown, I am delighted that we will once again have the opportunity to meet with each other, online and in-person.”
