The deadline for this year’s Environment and Sustainability Research Grants is fast approaching.

Each year we offer three awards of £15,000 to researchers working on projects that investigate some of the bigger issues of environmental sustainability. Former recipients have travelled to a variety of destinations from Hawaii to India, to investigate issues including carbon sequestration technology, sustainable food systems and disaster recovery policies.

2019 recipient Dr Agatha Herman, from Cardiff University, has been working with local communities in Tanzania to better understand the opportunities and challenges in promoting socially just and environmentally sustainable mining practices. Looking specifically at tanzanite mining and production, Dr Herman has used interviews, site tours and focus groups to gain an understanding of the different land rights and claims across tanzanite production, the extent to which gemstone production supports sustainable livelihoods, and how the future of gemstone production is envisaged by local communities.

The Environment and Sustainability Research Grants are generously supported by Deutsche Post-Stiftung. Applicants must have completed their PhD within the past 10 years, and preference is given to projects which have a strong fieldwork component, although lab, desk or archive-based projects may also be considered.
