As part of our work to highlight the benefits of studying geography at all levels and to promote the wide range of careers that geography can lead to, we hold regular Going Places events for Year 9 and Year 12 students.
These are a great opportunity to sample the diverse topics that make up geography and find out more about the professions geography graduates find themselves in. Our Geography Ambassadors guide students through the days and provide advice on what to expect when studying geography at GCSE, A Level and university.
Going Places events include engaging workshops hosted by enthusiastic guest speakers from a variety of sectors including environmental consultants and GIS specialists as well as business leaders and government policy makers. Beth Lee from Environmental Resources Management was one of the speakers at our Going Places event for Year 12 students in July.
She said: “It was fantastic to be part of the Going Places event and to speak to so many young people looking to pursue a career in geography. The subject itself is so broad, I can’t think of many disciplines that give you such a breadth of opportunity as you move into your professional career. Days like these, put on by the RGS-IBG, are invaluable in helping young people to make the right career choices at a really important time in their lives.”
Feedback from students who attended the event shows how it improved their understanding of the importance of geography and where studying the subject can lead – including careers that they didn’t previously know existed.
Our next Going Places event for Year 9 students takes place on 5 October 2018.
We offer a wealth of advice on careers and studying geography on our website. For downloadable career profiles for the classroom see Going Places with Geography.
