Area, one of the Society’s four academic journals, has published the first editorial from the new team of Editors, Continuing conversations: Reflections on the role and future of Area from the new editorial team.
The editorial by Hilary Geoghegan, Sarah Marie Hall, Alan Latham and Julian Leyland, sets out the collective vision of the new editors and their specific areas of focus during their time at Area. Whilst continuing to publish all types of research, the new team explicitly intend to reengage with the physical and environmental geography communities by positioning Area as a place for contemporary debates and encouraging geographic information scientists and data visualisation scholars to publish in the journal. They want to explore opportunities for connecting with all sorts of lay knowledges and citizen science, as well as further engaging with the role of digital technology in making and presenting geographical knowledge. They also plan to extend the discussion of method within the journal to more explicitly scrutinise geographers’ ordinary working practices.
Area publishes concise articles that make a significant contribution to the field of geography and this is the first of a series of editorials that will be written by the journal’s Editors on various specific themes over the course of the coming year.
