Are you interested in planning an expedition or overseas field research project? Explore South West on 9 February is your chance to learn directly from a range of scientists and explorers carrying out field research and scientific expeditions.

This one day seminar consists of a number of short talks and a series of workshops throughout the day. With a packed programme, attending Explore South West is vital for people of all backgrounds considering leading their own expeditions.

The day will kick off with talks by marine biologist Ceri Lewis, and founder of Explore What Matters Scotty Johnson, who will speak on ocean plastics and putting purpose into your ventures respectively. Conservation biologist and documentary presenter Niall McCann has worked on the front lines of conservation in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and his talk will discuss field research that makes a difference, while Professor of Physical Geography, Toby Pennington, will round up the morning with a focus on the logistics of planning research expeditions.

The afternoon’s talks will include a look at new technologies for fieldwork, and case studies on coral reef restoration and local collaborations. Belinda Kirk, who has spent the past 24 years leading groups into the wilderness and remote filming for the BBC, will explore where a career in expeditions can take you.

There will be the opportunity to take part in two workshops of your choice during the day. From storytelling and how to effectively communicate your discoveries, to funding for your field research and staying healthy in remote environments, there is a range of advice and individuals ready to share their experiences with you. If you are unsure where to start, the workshop ‘How do I begin’ will certainly be the place for you!

Explore South West takes place at the University of Exeter on Saturday 9 February, which is only two weeks away – so book your tickets now.

Tickets are £15.00 for students and £25.00 standard (plus booking fee), which includes lunch. Accommodation is not included in the ticket price.
