Chris Meintjes died at home in Johannesburg; he was an author, lecturer, photographer and passionate traveller to wilderness areas. He led some of the first groups to Zambia, Zaire, Ethiopia, Mali for Timbuctu, China and Mongolia when South Africa was at last permitted to apply for visas in those countries. He had a special love for Antarctica which he visited several times. He was an opera singer and classical music lover and regularly led tours to Italy from Johannesburg as well as to Eastern Europe.
