Congratulations to everyone receiving their A Level geography results today.
Published this morning, this year’s results show an increase in the number of students studying A Level geography in England, Wales and Northern Ireland –35,268 students this year, compared to 30,203 in 2020. With a 16.8% increase on last year's numbers, geography has the largest rise of all subjects.
The Society’s Director, Professor Joe Smith, said: “The Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) congratulates all the students receiving their A Level geography results today, especially given the exceptionally difficult circumstances they’ve faced over the last 18 months. Today's results are a testament to the hard work of the students and their geography teachers.
“Alongside the increase in students taking A Level geography, we are also pleased to see a continued uplift in the number of applications to geography degrees.
“The pandemic has thrown into sharp focus the interconnected nature of our world at local, national and international scales, and alongside our post-pandemic recovery are important issues such as climate change, migration, and inequalities. Addressing all of these issues requires up-to-date knowledge about the world’s people, places and environments – which studying geography can provide.
“In addition, students considering their next steps today should remember that undergraduate geography courses have some of the best student feedback in the National Student Satisfaction surveys. And geographers are sought after employees with above average graduate employment and good salary prospects."
