Congratulations to everyone receiving their GCSE geography results today.
Published this morning, the results show that the number of students studying geography has risen by 3.5% from last year. 265,169 students sat the exam in 2019, the highest number in 18 years and the eighth successive annual increase, making geography the sixth most popular subject at GCSE level.
Former Society President, Sir Michael Palin, said: “I’m delighted to hear that the geography GCSE numbers have risen to a record high. This not only highlights the hard work of teachers and students, but must surely reflect the fact that a knowledge of geography is an essential tool in understanding the enormously consequential and dizzyingly rapid changes our planet is going through. Geography is the one subject that looks at the whole story.”
