Earth Photo winner announced and exhibition open

Elisabetta Zavoli has won the 2019 Earth Photo competition for her work The Landfill Midwife, which depicts the only midwife for 18,000 villagers living inside and around Jakarta’s Bantar Gebang landfill site.  Her image also won the People category.

Elisabetta and the four other category winners were selected from over 1,000 submissions by an expert panel of judges chaired by award-winning photographer Marissa Roth. She said of Elisabetta’s winning work: “We chose Elisabetta Zavoli’s compelling photograph, The Landfill Midwife, as the winner because it shows her sophisticated photographic skills, pathos and respect for her subject, and her clear engagement as a concerned photographer for the environment. It is a starkly beautiful portrait that engages the viewer and resonates on many levels.”

Sue Flood won the Place category for her image Big Blue Berg which captures the grandeur and drama of a stunning iceberg in Antarctica, but also has a sense of foreboding with the imminent threat of climate change.

Aennor (collective) won the Nature category for their work Party’s Over which highlights the central role that plastic plays in our daily life and the urgent need to take collective action on waste management.

David Green won the Changing Forests category for his work Old Hedge, Venton Wood which captures a small piece of wilderness in North Devon which has broken free from its barb wire constraints.

Iris Moeller won the video category for Weak and Wobbly or Strong and Stable? Determining the Resistance of Coastal Salt Marshes to Extreme Storms. A short film explaining how a team of geographers and geologists plan to shed light on what makes salt marshes resistant to storm waves and why these environments are critical to our coastlines.

The Earth Photo exhibition of all 50 shortlisted images and films is on display in our Pavilion from 6 July to 22 August. Opening times are Monday to Friday from 10.00am-5.00pm, plus Saturdays from 10.00am-4.00pm. The exhibition will be closed on Sundays and bank holidays.

In addition to the exhibition in the Society’s Pavilion, Earth Photo will also tour to Forestry England venues in Grizedale Forest (Cumbria), Moors Valley (Dorset) and Fineshade Wood (Northamptonshire).
