This year, the Society’s Grants programme has seen the addition of four new research awards, aimed at supporting projects investigating some of the bigger issues of environmental sustainability.
Generously supported by Deutsche Post-Stiftung, the Environment and Sustainability Research Grants are £9,000 awards open to early career researchers, within 10 years of completing their PhD.
Recipients this year will be conducting geographical research across the globe; from urban climate resilience in Bangladesh, to carbon sequestration technology in Hawaii.
Dr Ivan Scales, of the University of Cambridge, will be leading a research team investigating the social-ecological dynamics of land use and landscape change in the mangrove forests of western Madagascar. The team of UK-based researchers will be working closely with Malagasy partner institutions to better understand how these valuable natural resources can be sustainably managed.
In Bangladesh, recipient Dr Joanne Jordan, of the University of Manchester, will be investigating how land tenure is affecting adaptation to climate change. Collaborating with researchers from the Independent University Bangladesh, Dr Jordan seeks to investigate the linked challenge of climate adaptation and poverty alleviation in the context of a growing, urbanising population in Dhaka.
Information about future awards will be published online in autumn 2015.
