The Society’s Council has ratified the accreditation of more than 70 programmes from a wide cross-section of institutions around the United Kingdom in the first round of its undergraduate geography programme accreditation scheme.
The Society’s Council has ratified the accreditation of more than 70 undergraduate geography programmes from 22 universities around the United Kingdom.
Accreditation is one of the ways for a university to receive independent recognition that the knowledge, skills and other attributes expected of high quality geography graduates, recorded in the QAA Subject Benchmark Statement for Geography, are being delivered.
Professor Joanna Bullard (Loughborough University), the Chair of the Accreditation Review Panel which assessed the applications, said: “The applications showcased the quality of undergraduate programmes and the benefits for students, across the breadth of the subject. The departments delivering these programmes show great commitment to geographical education and to students.”
Liz Tucker, the Chartered Geographer representative on the Panel, commented that graduates from these programmes would receive “a strong grounding in both core and specialist geographical knowledge, complemented by a wide range of skills of great value to employers.”
