Geography for all, an exciting new project being undertaken at the Society, aims to increase the diversity of students choosing geography at A Level and into further study.
It aims to address equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in geography, with a focus on under-representation by income and ethnicity, and has been informed by our previous research on who is and isn't studying geography, young people's views on their subject choices and careers, and the experiences of Black, Asian and minority ethnic geography teacher trainees and early career teachers.
We will be working with colleagues and organisations across the geographical community, starting with a small number of pilot schools undertaking direct work with under-represented students to better support their achievements and aspirations in geography. This work will be closely monitored and evaluated with lessons learnt shared with the wider geography community.
We will also establish a network of geography teachers to support early career and trainee geography teachers, helping them to address EDI in their teaching practice. This will be done through the provision of free CPD sessions that will draw on the existing work of individuals and groups, providing the opportunity to share resources and learning across the network.
Finally, we will engage with and support the potential involvement of universities and employers to better promote and support pathways into higher education and employment for geography students.
