Today is GIS Day and users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology are highlighting its benefits and the difference it makes to our everyday lives. Events are taking place across the globe to encourage more people to explore and learn more about GIS technology.
Geospatial data and technologies are important areas for investment for both government and business, and recent research has shown they have the potential to contribute an estimated £11 billion to the UK economy each year. The Geospatial Commission recently announced investments that will unlock the potential of geospatial data to provide new services to improve people’s day to day lives. This could include using data to tackle crime hotspots, mapping the quickest routes for emergency services, or using the investment to support digital innovations and emerging technologies.
As part of GIS Day 2018, we will be holding a workshop, led by Esri UK, for A Level students on using GIS in the classroom. This practical workshop will not only build on student’s existing knowledge but also highlight some of the real world applications of GIS data, with the help of ArcGIS Online software, which has a free subscription available to all UK secondary schools.
