Each year the Society’s Grants Programme awards over 70 grants, in excess of £180,000, to support geographical fieldwork overseas and in the UK. This year, research is being supported in 45 different countries, with grant recipients ranging from first year undergraduate students to senior researchers.
Recipients are increasingly using social media while in the field to provide updates on their projects and fieldwork experiences. Our ‘In the Field’ page gathers news updates from their social media and video accounts, in combination with recent content from their blogs and webpages.
With a huge variety of projects supported this year, from coral research in Honduras to glacier investigations in Greenland, our Projects Supported pages highlight the breadth of geographical research taking place across the globe.
Some of our senior research grant recipients are truly pushing the boundaries of geographical knowledge, using new technologies and collaborating with host-countries to develop important and innovative research projects. Meanwhile, undergraduate students are undertaking their first independent overseas field research, supported by our grants, with teams travelling as far as the Philippines, Peru and Madagascar to develop their fieldwork skills and collect research data for dissertations.
