The Society’s grants programme supports geographical research in the UK and overseas, helping develop new knowledge and advance the discipline. This year, the grants programme has supported 63 projects, directly involving 155 individuals, with over £170,000 of funding.
From first year undergraduates to senior researchers, geographers from 20 UK higher education institutions are carrying out research in 40 different countries, in locations as diverse as China’s Pearl River delta, the remote island of St Helena in the South Atlantic, and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
Projects supported this year range from investigations of ground water resources and indigenous land rights, to research on the geomorphology of desert wadis. Glaciology projects are as popular as ever, with six projects taking place in Norway, Chile, Switzerland, Iceland and Nepal; as are studies of rainforest ecology. Several projects are investigating forest habitat loss, with the environmental impacts of palm oil expansion emerging as a particular theme.
