The Society has supported 61 field research projects through its grants programme this year. Almost £200,000 of funding has been awarded to nearly 100 individuals from a range of institutions, and they have travelled to over 45 countries in order to carry out their research.
Destinations for physical geography fieldwork carried out this year include: Peru to investigate how selective logging can be best managed to protect the Amazon’s biodiversity; Uganda to explore water supply challenges and water security in local communities; and Greece and Montenegro to understand the history of the glaciation of the Balkans during the late Pleistocene.
Researchers undertaking human geography projects have travelled to destinations including: Trinidad and Tobago to investigate perceptions and vulnerabilities to environmental hazards in the country; Lebanon to look at housing insecurity and resident value in local communities of Beirut using geospatial analysis; and China, Tanzania and India to gain an in-depth understanding of China’s international development policies and practices.
