This year’s Hong Kong Research Grant has been awarded to Marine Roger to support her research assessing seismic hazards along the Chelungpu fault in Taiwan.
Marine, a PhD student from Newcastle University, is studying the 20 years of data collected since the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake, including satellite radar and optical imagery, to assess the possible consequences and potential damage a future earthquake event in the area could cause.
This summer she will travel to Taiwan to collect field data including laser scanning and drone photography along the Chelungpu fault line and nearby sites, collaborating with researchers from National Taiwan University. This new data will allow Marine to build models to assess the future seismic hazards along this fault line, allowing for better preparation in an area where both the population and cities are growing.
The Hong Kong Research Grant was established in 2003 and is supported by the Hong Kong branch of the Society. Each year a grant of £2,500 is awarded to a postgraduate student as part of the RGS-IBG Postgraduate Research Awards. Find out more.
