The Society is proud to have collaborated with Ammonite Press in the publication of a pivotal photography title celebrating the achievements of Isabella Bird, one of the 19th century’s most remarkable women explorers.
During a time of strict gender roles in British society, Isabella Bird was a pioneer for the empowerment of women. An accomplished adventurer and author, Isabella was a remarkable travel writer and photographer during the Victorian era and became fascinated by the power a photograph had alongside her captivating descriptions.
Deborah Ireland’s Isabella Bird: A Photographic Journal of Travels through China 1894–1896, chronicles Isabella’s photography and writing in her final expedition to China, using the photographs she took and developed en route. This lavish pictorial record, published by Ammonite Press in collaboration with the Society, features 200 unique photographs taken by Isabella. The photographs and original observations, commented on by travel expert Deborah Ireland, transport the reader to 19th century China and the insightful social observations of a passionate and inspiring woman.
On 7th April, the National Library of Scotland will host a launch event, featuring a talk by Deborah Ireland and a rare exhibit from the John Murray Archives and the RGS-IBG Collections.
