From January 2024, our academic journals Area, The Geographical Journal, Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers, and WIREs (published in association with the Royal Meteorological Society) will be available as online-only publications. Geo: Geography and Environment is already online-only.
This decision was not taken lightly and was based on many factors, including the cost and efficiency of print publication, and issues related to environmental sustainability. By moving to online-only journals, we will be able to redirect financial resources to other areas of our work with the academic community while reducing the consumption of resources that result from print publication and global distribution.
All Fellows, Associate Fellows and Student Members already have digital access to our journals included in their core membership subscription and this will continue, providing direct access to the journals online, wherever you are via the Members’ Area of the Society’s website at www.rgs.org/journals.
If you are a current Fellow, the option to subscribe to receive print journals will no longer be available at your next renewal. And any new Fellows joining from now will not be able to choose to receive any of the journals in print.
We are committed to continuing to bring members closer to new research and opportunities to develop their knowledge in the coming years. While there are many benefits to this decision, we understand it will be disappointing to some members.
