Ken Gregory was a celebrated geographer, geomorphologist and academic. He was appointed CBE in 2007 for services to geography and higher education, and received the Society’s Founder’s Medal in 1993 for ‘contributions to hydrology and geomorphology.’ Ken had previously been granted the Society’s Back Award in 1980, for ‘contributions to fluvial geomorphology and drought studies.’ He was made an Honorary Fellow in 2015.
From its foundation, Ken was a Chartered Geographer: it was an accreditation which Ken helped to design, research, and bring to fruition.
Throughout his very productive career, Ken remained a Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Southampton, where, over the years, he also served as Head of School, Dean of Science, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Ken wrote extensively about geomorphology and many of his books remain standard texts. He is credited with bringing the study of paleohydrology to Europe.
