Manufacturing is changing. The Society’s next 21st Century Challenges event on Wednesday 25 March asks, are we putting Britain back on the manufacturing map?
Manufacturing is currently going through a revolution, with smart technologies such as Computer-Aided Design, 3D printers and the Internet of Things changing both its nature and its geography.
How can Britain take advantage of these changes to create a thriving manufacturing sector with the potential to boost the country’s economy, create jobs, and support research and development? How can we encourage the ‘reshoring’ of manufacturing back to the UK? More widely, where will the factories of the future be and what will they make?
Peter Marsh, former Financial Times journalist and author of ‘The New Industrial Revolution: consumers, globalisation, and the end of mass production’, will chair a panel of speakers discussing the opportunities and challenges the current changes to manufacturing present to the UK. Panellists include Will Butler-Adams OBE FRGS, Managing Director of Brompton Bicycle; Dr Julie Madigan MBE, CEO of The Manufacturing Institute and co-founder of the UK’s first Fab Lab; and Simon Middleton, Founder of The Shackleton brand.
Ahead of the discussion, Peter said: “The world is on the cusp of a manufacturing revolution, and opportunities abound for countries and companies which understand the changes.
