Mark Shand, conservationist and Fellow of the Society, died on 23 April 2014. A prize-winning author for ‘Travels with my elephant’, about his 600 mile journey by elephant across India, Shand devoted his life to efforts to conserve the endangered Asian elephant, of which less than 30,000 remain in the wild. A co-founder and chairman of the conservation charity Elephant Family, Shand orchestrated numerous high-profile fundraising and awareness campaigns around the world, including Elephant Parade, which saw 250 life-size artist-painted elephants displayed across London in 2010.
