Two members of the Society’s field research programme, Migrants on the margins, presented at the Mobilising Global Voices 2019 conference held at the Houses of Parliament earlier this month.
The conference provided an opportunity for UK based and international researchers to share insights and findings on forced displacement, building resilience to climate change, and global inclusion and diversity within policy making and practice.
Professor Laura Hammond and Masters student Nouradin Nour, both from SOAS University of London, presented their research on how individuals can become ‘trapped’ when moving to cities and subsequently can become invisible to the state. Summarising the team’s methods and showcasing a number of aerial photographs illustrating how one of the settlements in the study city of Hargeisa has changed, they also highlighted the issues of eviction and how migration is a gendered story.
To date we have held two exhibitions in the Society’s Pavilion showcasing the Migrants on the margins research, which included a series of comics of individual migrant stories produced by PositiveNegatives. We have also produced a range of educational resources to complement the work, funded by the Global Learning Programme, including posters, a series of videos and case studies.
