Join us for an interactive workshop revisiting a classic Area paper by Louise Bracken and Emma Mawdsley, Muddy Glee: rounding out the picture of women and physical geography fieldwork.
Muddy glee was published in the Society’s academic journal Area in 2004, and highlighted gender discrimination in fieldwork and challenged notions of what physical geography fieldwork looked like. With the COVID-19 pandemic restricting many fieldwork activities and resulting in many researchers adapting to new circumstances, this is the perfect time to revisit this classic paper.
The workshop will involve a reflection from the original authors and short contributions from geographers across the discipline. It will aim to expand the picture beyond gender to discuss intersectional identities (including gender, sexuality, age, race, disability), as well as engage with the virtual spaces of physical geography fieldwork.
Our speakers include: Amita Bhakta, Annie Hughes, Anson Mckay, Anya Lawrence, Derek France, Des McDougall, Emma Mawdsley, Faith Tucker, Helene Burningham, Katie Parsons, Louise Bracken, Martin Zebracki, Morag Rose, Natasha Dowey, and Sarah Thornton.
Muddy Glee: what geography fieldwork means in the current moment is a free online two-hour workshop taking place at 12.30pm on Wednesday 10 November.
