Summer school students
We have recently reviewed and redesigned our school fieldwork web pages to strengthen our support for teachers organising fieldwork. Expert consultants provided up to date information about planning and leading fieldwork, as well as the legal requirements and health and safety implications to be considered when running school visits.
Whether you are an experienced fieldwork organiser or are thinking about planning fieldwork for the first time, take a look at the guidance and resources available, which include:
The value of fieldwork
Including information on what effective fieldwork looks like and links to published research papers focusing on fieldwork in geography. There is also information about presenting the case for fieldwork to your senior leadership team, an outline of the national curriculum requirements for fieldwork across all key stages, and a comprehensive overview of skills progression in fieldwork for both primary and secondary geography.
Fieldwork planning
This section contains a fieldwork planning toolkit which takes you through everything you’ll need to consider to plan and safely run effective fieldwork. There are also resources that link the Key Stage Four Programme of Study to a range of fieldwork experiences, including coastal, river-based, rural, and urban fieldwork. Fieldwork on a budget and inclusive fieldwork are also covered here.
Health and safety
This section provides comprehensive support around the legalities associated with school visits, information about risk management and risk assessments, a guide to incident management for school visits, guidance on safety around water, and information on transport safety and school visits overseas. Throughout this section we refer to the OEAP National Guidance, and provide sample materials where appropriate.
The school fieldwork web pages also link to our wealth of freely available fieldwork learning resources, as well as our range of fieldwork training and CPD for teachers and grants for school geography.
