The Society wishes to appoint a new Editor to its academic journal Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers. The new Editor will join the current editorial team of Professors Colin McFarlane (Durham University) and Matt Sparke (University of California, Santa Cruz).
Requirements of the post
The new Editor will be an internationally renowned scholar who has excellent networks worldwide and a broad interest in, and support for, the full range of research work undertaken in geography, especially at the highest international standing. They will have a commitment to attracting the best authors to publish in Transactions and to spending the time needed to perform as a proactive Editor, including actively encouraging submissions and promoting the journal, as well as a sympathetic and diplomatic approach to authors and referees. They will be committed to working with the other Editors to steer the vision and activities of the journal and will be willing and able to provide proactive mentorship and support to Transactions editorial board, which consists of mid-career scholars.
Transactions is one of the foremost international journals of geographical research, publishing the very best scholarship from around the world, across the whole range of the discipline. In particular, the distinctive role of the journal is to stimulate and shape the research agenda in geography; publish 'landmark' articles that make a major theoretical, conceptual or empirical contribution to the advancement of geographical understanding; publish formative papers across the whole spectrum of research in geography; act as the leading record of the intellectual development of the discipline; and identify and debate connections between geography and other disciplines. Transactions is also keen to expand its offering to include more ‘dialogical’ (or transactional) publication formats.

Transactions is one of the Society’s four academic journals, alongside Area, The Geographical Journal and Geo: Geography and Environment. The Society also publishes a book series, and WIRES Climate Change is published in association with the Society.
Transactions is published by Wiley, and administration of the submission and peer review processes are managed online using ScholarOne Manuscripts. A full-time Managing Editor based at the Society supports the four journals.
To apply, please send a letter of interest and plans for Transactions (maximum 2 pages), along with a CV and the names of two referees who could provide letters of support, by midnight on 20 January 2023 to Dr Catherine Souch and Dr Phil Emmerson via journals@rgs.org. All applications will be treated in confidence. Interviews will be held shortly after the closing date, and it is expected that the new Editor would start shortly after (at the latest by end of March 2023). A modest honorarium is awarded. The term will normally be for five years.
