We are delighted to announce our latest online exhibition: Observed on Paper.

The online exhibition showcases drawings and watercolours, taken from our Collections, which highlight illustrations of people and landscapes produced many decades before the camera became part of the standard kit taken on every scientific research expedition.

The works include sketches by Dr David Livingstone, Dr Fridtjof Nansen, Gertrude Bell, and other artists and individuals who were part of expeditions to, among other places, Africa, South America and Antarctica in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Delicate, fragile and impermanent, all of the original works form part of the Society's wider Collections which comprise two million items, including maps, photographs, archives and artefacts spanning over 500 years of geographical science and history.
