Last month, Jisc, the UK’s research and education not-for-profit organisation, and publisher Wiley signed a four year ‘read and publish’ agreement that extends to many UK universities and research institutions. The agreement which began on Monday 2 March and runs to Sunday 31 December 2023, enables authors and affiliated researchers from all participating Jisc member institutions to publish primary research and review articles in Wiley’s Open Access or OnlineOpen journals at no cost to the individual.
The agreement follows a number of similar deals worldwide and is expected to increase the proportion of Open Access (OA) articles published by UK researchers in Wiley journals from 27% to 85% in the first year, with the potential for this to reach 100% by 2022. The agreement will enable UK research institutions to better control the costs of access and OA publishing, and will also support a simplified process for authors and their institutions, enabling compliance with funder mandates and Plan S.
To be eligible, the corresponding author of the paper must belong to an affiliated Jisc institution, and this includes early career researchers and those holding permanent lecturing or research positions. A full list of affiliated institutions is below.
All four of the Society’s journals, Area, Geo: Geography and Environment, The Geographical Journal, and Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers are published by Wiley. This new agreement therefore allows researchers at many UK institutions to publish open access articles in all of our journals at no cost to the individual.
The Society sees this as a positive move for UK researchers but continues to recognise the need to provide publication opportunities that are suited to all of the journals’ global contributors.
