Following the appointment of David Wood as the Head of the Geography within the Government Science and Engineering Profession (GSE) at the start of the year, 11 new Deputy Heads of Geography have now been appointed with specific areas of responsibility.

Steve Campbell (Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government) – Raising profile and embedding geography in policy making cycle

Claire Edwards (Natural England) – Raising profile and embedding geography in delivery

Alistair Edwardes (ONS Data Science Campus) – Professional standards, guidance and tools

Ian Spencer (Ministry of Defence) – Professional standards and GSE members

Brian Vinall (Environment Agency) – Professional outreach and external recruitment

Patrick Rickles (Ministry of Justice) – Diversity an inclusion

Clare Hadley and Rollo Home (Ordnance Survey) – Local government (joint)
Each leading on their specific area, the Deputy Heads will work closely with David to help put geography at the heart of policy design and delivery. Recent activities organised by the group include the very successful Geographers in Government conference held earlier in September.
We will continue to support the Geographers in Government group and build upon the existing connections with the new Deputy Heads, many of whom are Chartered Geographers.
