To maintain their professional accreditation, all Chartered Geographers are required to submit an annual log of their completed Continuing Professional Development (CPD). And since late 2019, Chartered Geographers have been able to request that their CPD log is reviewed and certified by the accreditation scheme’s assessors.
In the review, the assessors check the appropriateness of the CPD for the individual’s career stage and specialism, its relationship to their career goals, and how well they have incorporated what they have learnt into their professional practice. The assessors also check that the CPD is well-aligned to the scheme’s Framework of Competencies for ongoing accreditation.
Everyone who asks for certification receives personalised feedback on their CPD log, along with suggestions for ways to continue developing their knowledge and skills to have a greater professional impact.

Chartered Geographer assessor, Tom Grahamslaw, said, “Involvement in the CPD certification process is incredibly interesting; a true insight into people’s day-to-day application of geography. I am particularly enthused to see the passion each person has for advancing geography through their everyday work or through the support they provided to others. It is great to see how the new Framework of Competencies has filtered down into people’s approach and is helping to shape professional development.
“My involvement has also inspired me to think differently about my own professional development and recognise the benefit of even the smallest learning opportunity and its value in my overall professional development journey”.
