Professor James (‘Jim’) Johnson died on the morning of 12 March 2009 at his home in Lancaster; he was aged 78. He will be remembered for his research in historical geography and population studies, his books on urban geography, migration, and Ireland, and above all else for the inspirational nature of his teaching.
