The Society will host professionals from across the energy sector on the evening of 29 November for a 21st Century Challenges Policy Forum event on Rescaling the UK’s Energy System.
'Geographers have described the ‘energy challenge of the 21st century’ as understanding how we can bring about ‘a new transition, towards a more sustainable energy system characterised by universal access to energy services…security and reliability of supply from efficient, low-carbon sources’.
How policymakers tackle the challenge of low-carbon transition is the focus of Rescaling the UK’s Energy System, the latest in the Society’s series of 21st Century Challenges Policy Forums. This free event is organised in partnership with the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC).
Driven by the need to meet national and international commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, renewable electricity generation is growing. As cities, communities and individuals generate their own power, this shift from centralised to decentralised energy generation has important implications for space and place.
An expert panel, chaired by Damian Carrington, Head of Environment at the Guardian, will discuss the ‘energy revolution’ taking place in the UK, how this might be affected by the UK’s vote to leave the European Union and what is needed from a future ‘UK Energy Strategy’ to facilitate the shift to a low-carbon future.
A drinks reception will follow the panel discussion and audience Q&A.
