Research Group news: May 2021

The Society’s 32 Research Groups bring together active researchers and those with a professional interest in a particular aspect of geography and related disciplines. They each support and promote their area of geography through organising events, offering dissertation prizes, and providing support and funding for postgraduates.

Here is a round up of activity over the past month: 

• The Postgraduate Forum held their Annual Mid-Term Conference (19 – 23 April), which for the first time took place online. Sessions covered a wide range of topics across the discipline. Take a look at the PGF Twitter page to see some of the fantastic postgraduate research that was shared.

• Working with Spatial Analytics and Data, the Quantitative Methods Research Group have launched ‘SAD: The Interviews’. The inaugural interview was held with Mike Batty on Tuesday 13 April, and the group welcomed Luc Anselin for the second interview of the series on Tuesday 4 May.

• The Food Geographies Research Group held the third workshop in their ‘Decolonising Food Geography Seminar Series’, on the theme ‘Diversity in Food Geographies’. The fourth and final workshop will be hosted by Bangor University on Wednesday 16 June on the topic ‘Making Fair: Food Heritage, Farming and Community’.

• Andrew Crooks delivered a webinar on ‘Analysing and Modelling Urban Environments Utilising Computational Social Science’ as part of the Geographic Information Science Research Group webinar series and was followed on Wednesday 5 May by Sarah Battersby talking on Spatial in the world of Self-Service Analytics.

• The Geographies of Health and Wellbeing Research Group are supporting the 20th ENRGHI Conference, which will be taking place from the 30 June – 2 July 2021. The call for papers has been extended to Wednesday 19 May – submit your abstract here.

• Calls for Papers are now open for the Political Geography Research Group Bi-Annual Workshop, which will be taking place on 30 June – 1 July on the theme ‘Inequalities of Knowledge Production’. More information on submitting and registering here.

• The Geography and Education Research Group are holding an online event exploring ‘Student transitions: journeys into and through geography at university’ on Friday 21 May. View the schedule and register to attend before Thursday 13 May here.

• The Climate Change Research Group have announced Nuala Burnett, James Dyson and Laura Marcus as the winners of their climate communication competition for their project CliMates. You can see the winning entry and the five runners up over on the group’s Twitter page.

• Angeliki Balayannis and Steve Hinchcliffe discussed COVID-19 and waste in the first of the Geographies of Health and Wellbeing Research Group’s new webinar series ‘Conversations on COVID-19’.

• The Economic Geography Research Group were joined by Jennifer Johns and Liam Keenen for the first two instalments of their PhD event series ‘Q&A with an Economic Geographer’.

• Anita Graser discussed ‘Exploratory Analysis of Massive Movement Data’ in a recent Geographic Information Science Research Group webinar. A recording of the session has been uploaded to YouTube for all those who missed it.
