The Society’s 32 Research Groups bring together active researchers and those with a professional interest in a particular aspect of geography and related disciplines. They each support and promote their area of geography through organising events, offering dissertation prizes, and providing support and funding for postgraduates.
Here is a round up of their recent activity:
The Carceral Geographies Research Group held the first of its Online Early Career Perspectives Seminars on Tuesday 5 October, with presentations by Carl Berry (University of Bristol), Rachel Andrews (NUI Galloway), and Joshua Shaw (York University, Canada).
The History and Philosophy of Geography Research Group (HPGRG) held a workshop marking 40 years of the group, Looking backward and forward, on Tuesday 7 September.
Harriet Walters has been awarded the HPGRG 2021 Biannual Public Engagement Award.
The Planning and Environment Research Group (PERG) and Energy Geographies Research Group (EnGRG) organised Winning the grant: demystifying the research funding landscape on Tuesday 7 September.
The Quantitative Methods Research Group (QMRG) organised the Spatial Analytics and Data (SAD) interview with Professor Danny Dorling. The informal conversation provided a forum for any scholars interested in data, spatial analysis and cutting-edge methods and took place on Tuesday 28 September.
QMRG also held an online event Geographic Data Science with Python on Monday 6 September. It provided a hands-on, general overview of an upcoming book by Sergio Rey, Dani Arribas-Bel and Levi Wolf, which looks at the tools, methods and theory which meet the challenges of contemporary data science.
The RACE working group organised a pre-conference meetup to support early career scholars on Tuesday 31 August.
The Space, Sexualities and Queer Research Group (SSQRG) has joined Twitter.
The Transport Geography Research group (TGRG) held an expert panel discussion on What next for Transport Geography post-covid?
The Geographies of Education Research Group has organised a series of Teaching and Scholarship in HE online events. The first session was hosted by Lynda Yorke, Naomi Holmes, Lizzie Rushton and Martin Davis, with the series aiming to create a new forum for meeting, sharing, collating, and supporting teaching and scholarship (TeaS) in higher education.
The Race Culture and Equality Working Group have published a new report on supervising Black Geography PhD researchers in the UK.
The Geographies of Children, Youth and Families Research Group has published a free e-book titled Navigating the Post-doctoral Job Market.
Upcoming Research Group events
The Population Geography Research Group are holding an online event to celebrate their 50th anniversary on Wednesday 3 November between 12.00pm and 2.00pm, featuring Catherine Souch, Sarah Marie Hall, Brenda Yeoh, Phil Rees, James Esson and George Tan.
The Urban Geography Research Group are holding their annual conference, Spaces of Hope, on Thursday 18 and Friday 19 November.
The Energy Geography Research Group and the Gender and Feminist Geography Research Group are holding a webinar series, which are running until March 2022.
