RGS-IBG Annual International Conference 2022

We are delighted to announce our plans for our 2022 Annual International Conference which will take place at Newcastle University from Tuesday 30 August to Friday 2 September 2022. The conference will have in-person, online and hybrid ways to participate. We are really excited the conference will be in Newcastle, and hope to see many of you there in person. 

Chaired by Professor Rachel Pain of Newcastle University, the theme is Geographies beyond recovery. The events of the past two years have focused attention on the interrelated nature of disasters, from climate change, flooding and heatwaves, to COVID-19 and mental health crises; from rapidly declining biodiversity, to dispossessions of people from land, housing and community resources; from ongoing and evolving forms of racism, settler colonial violence and gender-based violence, to environmental loss and degradation and more. The conference theme asks geographers and our research collaborators to critically interrogate the idea and practice of recovery, across scales of life and global contexts, and to explore the geographies that might lie beyond.

This year’s conference will not be ‘business as usual’ given everything that has happened over the last two years, from COVID-19 to Black Lives Matter, and from COP26 to concerns about cultures and behaviour within disciplinary spaces. We are keen to take this opportunity to make the conference more inclusive, sustainable and accessible, building on our initiatives over the last few years, and our broader activities with Research Groups and the geographical community.

Submissions for the conference are expected to open on 31 January 2022. Between now and then, we encourage all those who wish to participate to take the opportunity to think about how you want to organise sessions and papers at the conference, focusing particularly on the kinds of spaces and conversations you want to curate, and how you want to engage attendees in person and online.
