Ron Cooke Award 2022 for the A Level independent investigation

The Ron Cooke Award recognises A Level students’ work towards the independent investigation, also known as the NEA.

The award, which is kindly supported by eminent physical geographer and former President of the Society Sir Ron Cooke, will be presented to a student, who completed an NEA for their 2021 examinations.

The Society is asking geography teachers to submit a copy of their students’ best NEA scripts which will be assessed by an invited panel of geographical experts. We particularly want to celebrate students’ work which had engaged them with new ideas, provided opportunities for innovation and/or demonstrates their personal interest in geography. 

Last year’s Ron Cooke Award recipient, Hollie Daw from Queen Mary's College, was recognised for her independent investigation An examination of the factors affecting infiltration rate at Ashford Hill National Nature Reserve.

Teachers can submit their students’ work by emailing an electronic copy of their scripts and accompanying planning forms to education@rgs.org. More than one submission can be made by a school. Please write Ron Cooke Award in the email subject box and include the following details:

• Teacher and school details

• Student name and final marks for the NEA

• A short supporting statement from the teacher explaining why the script(s) have been submitted and any relevant information about the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on the student’s work.

Submissions must be received by Friday 26 February 2022.

The winner will be invited to attend our annual Medals and Awards Ceremony taking place next year.
