The Society is delighted to announce new Schools and Higher Education (HE) partnerships to support the teaching of the new geography curriculum.
The new Changing Places subject content at A Level examines a more complex picture of place
In light of the geography subject content introduced in the new A Level courses, the Society is working closely with a number of HE colleagues to establish a programme of termly subject update lectures for A Level students, subject knowledge CPD events for teachers, and local fieldwork events.
The first of these events took place in November 2016, with Professor Richard Washington (University of Oxford) delivering a very well-received session for local teachers which explored climate change and the hydrological cycle.
The current spring schedule of events includes the following (all free of charge):
- Thursday 2 February, University of Birmingham – Teacher CPD: Understanding urban change
- Wednesday 1 March, University of Birmingham – Teacher CPD: Changing places
- Thursday 9 March, Keele University – Teacher CPD: Understanding and exploring glaciated landscapes
- Thursday 16 March, University of Birmingham – Teacher CPD: Global environmental change
- Wednesday 5 July, University of Oxford – Teacher CPD: Landscape systems
The events will be used by the Society to produce educational resources, such as Ask the Expert podcasts, case studies, videos, and lesson plans – all shared online for teachers and students nationally.
This work enhances the Society’s existing support for teachers and students and sits alongside other schools / HE partnerships supported by the Society, including the Geography Ambassador scheme; educational resources for schools; and popular programme of School Member lectures in London.
