We are delighted to share our spring events programme, full of interesting topics, ideas, and insight.
Our Monday night lecture series for Fellows and members kicks off on 10 January with Michael Bond discussing how our brains keep us orientated, why some people are so much better at navigating than others, and what it means to be lost in the age of GPS. Other speakers include Parag Khanna exploring how mass migration will reshape the world; Dr Helen Pilcher discussing how humans are changing the evolutionary fate of all life on Earth; and Emily Penn sharing her insights on plastic pollution from the tropics to the Arctic, connecting her scientific insights from eXXpedition to upstream solutions on land.
Meanwhile, our Collections-related events include talks on Lucy Atkinson, the 19th century explorer who travelled on horseback over 40,000 miles in some of the most remote and hostile regions of Central Asia and Siberia by Nick Fielding; the contributions of animals to geographical knowledge and the traces they have left in the Society’s Collections by Dr Catherine Oliver, and Geraldine Rendel’s trans-Arabian journey in 1937 by William Facey.
Events organised by our regional committees feature 2019 Earth Photo finalist, Sue Flood, sharing her passion for photography and the understanding of polar regions and their wildlife; Professor Alison Stenning discussing the relationships we build with our streets and neighbourhoods; and Tom Heap continues his regional theatres tour of the UK in Exeter, talking about the inspiring people delivering solutions to global warming.
This spring, the Society’s events will be held in person and will also be livestreamed. Details of how to watch online are on each event’s webpage.
