We are delighted to be the latest partner of the Wiley Digital Archives, and to be enabling several million items from our Collections to be digitised.
Working closely with an international advisory board including leading researchers, archivists, Fellows, members and librarians, the Society and Wiley will identify and organise content for digitisation. Items to be conserved and scanned include manuscripts, maps, illustrations, field notes, meeting minutes, administrative records, proceedings, correspondence, and other archival content.
Society Director Professor Joe Smith said: “The unique and incredibly rich material in our archive tells the story of geographical science and global exploration and this collaboration will encourage new educational and scholarly enquiry into our Collections.”
This is the latest of three initiatives to make our Collections accessible to a wider audience in order to support teaching and learning. We also have an ongoing programme with the British Film Institute to open up our film collection for educational research purposes and our picture library is hosted by Getty.
This digitisation partnership is part of an ongoing relationship the Society has with Wiley which spans 18 years and includes an extensive publishing programme for journals and books hosted on our new hub.
