The Geographical Journal, one of the Society’s four academic journals, has published a new editorial, The Future of The Geographical Journal: Engaging with Public Issues.
The editorial by Professors Darren Smith, Ben Anderson, Parvati Raghuram and Robert Wilby, sets out the editorial team’s vision for the future of the journal. The Geographical Journal has been the journal of the Society since 1893 and has a history of engaging with topics that both the geographical community, and the public more generally, care deeply about.
The current editors are seeking to build on this by publishing papers that engage directly with what they are calling ‘public issues’ - matters that are of importance and relevance to us all. These might be grand socio-environmental challenges, or they might be more localised or more marginalised; they might be issues that are already subject to concerted action and research, or they might be issues that are just emerging or are anticipated to emerge. The editors envision that through engaging with these public issues, geographical scholarship can become even more valuable, have greater impact, and be more relevant for effectively informing and shaping policy and practice that addresses the challenges of this century.
As emphasised in the editorial, The Geographical Journal is actively seeking papers, commentaries, and themed sections from across the discipline of geography, that offer critical engagement and positive proposals on 'public issues’, big or small.
