The newest addition to the RGS-IBG book series, The Unsettling Outdoors: Environmental Estrangement in Everyday Life, is now available to order online.
Written by Dr Russell Hitchings (University College London), the book offers a detailed look at how the ways in which different domains of everyday life are experienced can influence the likelihood of people benefitting from green spaces. Going beyond the relatively simple idea of ‘green spaces are good’ and moving from city workers to festival goers, it adds real depth to debates about nature experience and provides a fresh argument about the importance of engaging with relevant social trends.
Russell said of his book: “The basic idea that I’ve been working with for a while now is that, whilst it can be tempting to start with an idea about creating attractive green spaces for people, if we don’t engage with the changing ways in which they live, we are missing a really important part of the puzzle. I also wanted to tell the story of these studies more fully to show the potential of the approach that I took.”
