This year’s Young Geographer of the Year competition is now open for entries. The competition, run in partnership with Geographical magazine, gives students the opportunity to explore the geography of the Arctic. Through research needed to produce their competition entries, pupils will discover what makes this polar environment unique and how changes in the Arctic can have global impacts.
There are four categories for entrants: KS2 (pupils aged 9-11); KS3 (pupils aged 11-14); KS4 (pupils aged 14-16); and KS5 (pupils aged 16-18). The first three categories require pupils to submit an A3 poster, while A Level students must submit a 1,500 word essay. All entries must showcase why the Arctic is unique and adhere to the entry criteria of the relevant age category.
We encourage schools to host their own semi-finals before submitting their top ten entries into the national competition.
The Rex Walford Award runs alongside the Young Geographer of the Year competition and is open to trainee and newly qualified teachers. Teachers must produce a scheme of work, covering at least three lessons, focusing on the unique nature of the Arctic. The Society would also be interested to see examples of pupils’ work that has been produced following the lessons.
Information on the remarkable polar environment of the Arctic can be found on the Discovering the Arctic website and the NERC Arctic Office website.
The deadline for both competitions is 5.00pm on Wednesday 10 October 2018.
