Modern ‘Web Wapping’ Geographical Information Science (GIS) techniques are being used for the first time to identify and locate each of the Belfast Blitz’s casualties in the city and across Northern Ireland, through a project led by Queen’s University Belfast in partnership with the Northern Ireland War Memorial Museum.
The project, ‘Mapping the Blitz’, marks the 80th anniversary of the World War II Blitz in Belfast by the Luftwaffe in 1941, causing the deaths of over 900 people – residents, civil defence and serving personnel – as German planes bombed Belfast and other parts of Northern Ireland in April and May 1941. This collaborative project is mapping the location of each Blitz casualty to create a publicly accessible interactive web map. Combined with other biographical and contemporary map and image resources it will detail the human impact of this historic event on Belfast as well as looking at its legacy on the urban fabric of the city, still present today.
