Sustainable communities

This activity investigates whether Milton Keynes is a sustainable community. It is a virtual fieldtrip that can be easily adapted to be applied to a range of towns and cities. Students consider a range of factors based on the criteria for sustainable communities proposed on the Egan Wheel. The resource includes worksheets and examples of students' work. Key Stage 3.

Sustainable shopping

The sustainability of our shopping habits is a topic that is frequently covered in the media. This local area study investigates the extent to which shops, supermarkets and consumers are taking steps to decrease their environmental impact. The resource can be adapted for either KS3 or GCSE, and contains introductory information, worksheets and ideas for follow-up activities. Key Stage 3/GCSE.

The environmental impact of a major sporting event

This investigation studies the environmental impact of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in terms of factors such as noise, litter and traffic/pedestrian congestion in the area of Southfields. This resource focuses on the use of GIS (ESRI ArcGIS) software to record, analyse and present the findings of the study, but materials for the actual fieldwork process are also included. GCSE.
