The Society’s Fieldwork Apprenticeships offer grants of £1,500 to enable students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in an overseas fieldwork project led by an academic member of staff at their university.
Spending a number of weeks learning from established researchers in the field aids personal development, building confidence, enthusiasm and inspiration that can be taken forward through the remainder of a student’s time at university and beyond into their careers. Students also gain geographical skills and knowledge, alongside valuable experience in field research planning, logistics and health and safety. Many students’ third year dissertations directly follow on from their experiences gained through this award.
Previous projects have seen students conduct research on a variety of topics in a range of locations, from global water security in Uganda and contemporary pro-glacial lakes in Iceland to the ecological consequences of glacio-fluvial sediment transfer and small scale glacial erosional features in Switzerland. Projects have been UK based too.
Applicants should be enrolled in an undergraduate geography degree at a UK university, in their first or second year.
